Motivation to Lose Weight

The motivation to lose weight for me came very suddenly when I developed a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). At 24 years old and 6 feet tall I weighed 275 pounds and had 37% body fat. I led a very sedentary life and ate out around 4 times a week. Most of my time was spent sitting at a computer. Out of nowhere I started noticing strange health problems but nothing serious. Odd pains throughout my body, etc. A few months later I was in the ER with chest pains and I couldn’t catch my breath.

They did various tests eventually including a CT scan which showed the clots in my lungs. All the genetic tests came back negative and there is really no doubt this was caused by being obese. I was overweight since middle school and maintained a weight around 260 pounds for years since. To me I was still young and my weight wasn’t increasing much so I figured it was something I would deal with “later in my life.”

Now on some days I find myself out of breath and every day I get pain in my chest. I have to take anticoagulant medication daily. This means I can’t be as active anymore or risk injury because even a minor scrape will bleed heavily.

You shouldn’t wait for your weight problems to impact your health permanently. Eventually it will and it can happen anytime. For you it might be diabetes, heart disease, or any number of serious health complications linked to obesity. Below you can find links to other sites and blogs like this one to help motivate you to lose weight and get fit. I would say good luck but you don’t need luck, you need the discipline and desire to get in shape. So, instead I’ll say DO IT!

One of the most motivating things I’ve seen is this video from John Stone Fitness. This was over the course of about a year I believe with most of the weight loss happening in about 3 months:

This is 6 months:

This is just 30 days:
