Detailed Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is more popular than ever! Not only does it taste great and is a warm and comforting beverage, but research has found that green tea does wonders for the body. The Chinese have been drinking and enjoying the benefits of green tea for a long time, even going back to ancient times. The Chinese have been using green tea for centuries to treat such ailments as depression, headaches, etc.

In today’s world researchers have found, and continue to find, many other illnesses where green tea is helping with prevention, such as reducing the risks of certain cancers such as esophageal cancer and reducing cholesterol levels. At the University of Purdue researchers have recently found that a certain compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Other medical conditions where drinking green tea has been found to be helpful are: rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, infection, and some improvements to an impaired immune function.

Apparently, green tea and its richness in catechin polyphenois—a powerful anti-oxidant, helps greatly in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. What makes this anti-oxidant so good and safe, is that it kills cancer cells without harming one’s healthy tissue. Green tea has also been found to help the body defend against other types of cancers such as stomach cancer, ovarian cancer, oral cancer, prostate cancer, cancer of the colon and cervical cancers

In addition, two other great benefits have been found by drinking green tea and that is, it can help with dieting, preventing tooth decay and helps also to prevent bad breath. A study conducted in 1999, at the University of Geneva in Switzerland has shown that when men were given caffeine and a green tea extract, they burned off more calories than those who were given only caffeine or a placebo. Two other important facts about green tea are that it helps to grow strong nails and hair.

To date, no harmful side effects have been found from drinking green tea, except for insomnia. This is due to the caffeine that is in it. But many green tea products now are decaffeinated; thus eliminating insomnia. It should be noted; however, that green tea contains less caffeine than coffee.
