Detailed Health Benefits of Vitamin E
The benefits of vitamin E are to supply or assist in supplying antioxidants. There is some discussion as to whether vitamin E actually acts as a signaling molecule. In any event, vitamin E is important for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect cells, body tissue and organs from the damaging effects of free radical. The fat-soluble compound helps in the formation of red blood cells. In addition, vitamin E helps the body to utilize vitamin K which is necessary for normal clotting of blood.
Although vitamin E is available in both synthetic and natural forms, it is typically obtained through the diet. Some of the richest sources of vitamin E are found in fortified cereals, wheat germ, vegetable oils (sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil, olive oil, etc.) and nuts and seeds such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts and sunflower seeds. Products made from those sources also contain vitamin E. For example peanut butter is a product containing peanuts. Other food having vitamin E include whole grains, leafy green vegetables and vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and avocados. Fruits such as kiwi and mango, liver and some dairy products also have vitamin E.
For those individuals aged 14 and over, the daily dietary allowance is 15 mg. Vitamin E deficiency is rare. One should consider a balanced diet following the recommendations in the food pyramid to ensure they receive essential vitamins.
If you’re considering taking a vitamin E supplement consult with your doctor first and make sure your physician knows your diet and what other medication is being taken. Always remember that a lot of vitamins and minerals can be toxic when consumed in larger amounts than recommended and supplements can easily put you into these dose ranges if you’re already getting enough from natural sources.
